In the finale of the war between Avengers and the X-Men in the AvX event over the return of the Phoenix, Professor X was killed by Cyclops. Captain America decides to form a squad of Avengers to promote Professor X's dream of peaceful co-existence.

#1-4: Vs Red Skull, with Professor X's telepathic abilities, and the S-Men.
#5: Wonder Man, Wasp and Sunfire join. Rogue accidentally kills Grim Reaper
#6: In the past, Thor enchanted his axe Jarnborn to cleave Apocalypse's celestial armor. Kang steals the axe.
#7-8: Apocalypse twins, Uriel and Eimin destroys a Celestial with Jarnborn then destroys the orbiting SWORD base.
#9: AoU tie-in: In the past, Kang sends Uriel and Eimin to kill Steve Rogers in the AoU alternate universe but they fail the test.
#10-17: The team splits up over disagreements about using violent methods. The twins resurrect and create their Four Horsemen (Daken, Banshee, Grim Reaper and Sentry). Banshee, Grim Reaper and Daken capture Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man and Wolverine respectively. Scarlet Witch agrees to use her powers with Wonder Man's energies to rapture mutants to the twins' ark so that they relocate to a new planet but plans to rally the mutants to fight the twins. Rogue is unaware of the Witch's plans and kills her for her betrayal. The twins summon the Celestial Executioner Exitar, who judges Earth unworthy. Thor kills Uriel and fights Eimin but is too late to get hold of Jarnborn to persuade Exitar from destroying Earth.
#18-22: Five years later, on Planet X, Havok and Wasp destroy the tachyon dam, allowing Kang and his Chronos Corps in. They gather the other former mutant members of the Unity Squad and sent their minds back in time to take over their past selves to undo the future. In the present, Rogue and Sentry fight Exitar, allowing Thor to cleave the Celestial with Jarnborn. Kang arrive to take in the Celestial energies but was stopped by Havok and Sunfire.
#23: Rogue deals with Wonder Man's powers and psyche stucked in her body. Havok and Wasp deal with the loss of their daughter they had during their time in Planet X.
#24-25: The S-Men capture Havok, Rogue and Scarlet Witch. They escape to find Magneto in a concentration camp. Magneto kills the S-Men and seemingly kills the Red Skull he turns into the Red Onslaught.
Annual 2014: Mojo brainwashes supernatural heroes to form the Avengers of the Supernatural, defeating the Unity Squad to take part in a reality show. Ghost Rider awakens and Mojo's hold on the heroes is broken. The heroes stop the rampage of the rampaging Spirit of Vengeance.
The team heads into the Avengers & X-Men: AXIS event. The book was relaunched after the event.

Annual 2015: Emerald Warlock joins Alan Dakor, Agatha Harkness and Ghost Dancer in the Department of the Uncanny to fight Hilda Von Hate in the past. He and Ghost Dancer teamed up with the Unity Squad to fight Erida, Goddess of Hate before he killed the Ghost Dancer, revealing himself to be evil all the time.
Annual 2015: Emerald Warlock joins Alan Dakor, Agatha Harkness and Ghost Dancer in the Department of the Uncanny to fight Hilda Von Hate in the past.
